Now you may be wondering why Windows is paid and Ubuntu is free. Well Ubuntu is a "Open-Source"...Which means that anyone can download it for free and even work on it and create their own distros out of Ubuntu. Ubuntu is backed up by Canonical to provide to engineer's and equipment needed to build a version - every 6 months. The community also generates revenue through donations.
