Motorola recently held up an event at which they unveiled two new devices in the 'moto' line, the Motorola Moto X and the Moto G. Now you're probably hit with a "I've seen these devices before", but that's not the case. Both the devices are displayed as 'New' stating that both of them are upgraded devices based off of their predecessors. In today's article we're going to be focusing onto the Moto G.
As I first read through the specs and information about the second gen Moto G, to be frank, I was quite surprised and satisfied. No one really anticipated a 2nd gen to roll over, but it did. In terms of the spec sheet, it's definitely is better than its predecessor.
Design
Let's bounce off with the design of G. In terms of its dimensions, it's slightly bigger compared to the previous gen.
Dimensions: 141.5 x 70.7 x 11 mm
It's definitely not a huge upgrade, but Motorola decided to push things up a bit, I guess...
The major improvement this time around is with the speakers. The New Moto G has stereo speakers both above and below the display. This should provide vivid feedback whilst playing games or watching digital video files.
It does look to have more rounded corners and is labeled "Sleek" by a couple of users who managed to get their hands on the device.
The new Moto G weighs at around 149g, which is 6g more compared to the weight of the previous Moto G.
Display
The display of the Moto G does spice things up a bit, it still does have the same material which is the IPS LCD Capacitive Touchscreen. But this time, it's rounded all the way up to 5.0 inches. That's about 0.5 inches bigger compared to the display of the previous generation.
In terms of the resolution, it's still a 1280 x 720 display which should suffice for heavy as well as light usage. The pixel density of the display is what's brought down this time, its rendered up to 294 ppi this time, which is about 32 ppi less compared to the previous display. Even though that's not a huge difference, and won't really make a difference, let's take it into consideration.
The display is protected with a Corning Gorilla Glass 3.0
Camera
Yes, it's safe to say the camera is upgraded, massively. The primary camera of the Moto G is now set all the way up to 8 MP, which is 3 MP more compared to that of the previous generation. In terms of the resolution too, the camera houses 3264 x 2448 pixels this time around. The previous generation had a 2952 x 1944 pixel resolution. Other features, such a panorama, face detection, HDR, geo-tagging are all pushed up to the camera.
In terms of video footage, it shoots video at 720p@30 fps just like the previous camera did, with stereo sound recording and HDR.
The front facing camera is rounded all the way up to 2.0 MP which is about 0.7 MP more compared to the previous secondary camera.
Memory
For all you heavy users, I've got some great news. The 2nd Gen comes in with expandable storage. The G now supports cards up to 32 gigs.
In terms of the internal storage, it ships out in 2 variants, 16 & 32 GB variants with the good old 1 GB RAM which should suffice for heavy as well as light usage.
Internals
Coming down to the last bit of goodness, the internals. Based on what's inside, it's nothing new. The 2nd Gen still comes in with the same old goodies that its predecessor housed.
Qualcomm MSM8226 Snapdragon 400 Chipset
A Cortex A-7 clocked up to 1.2 GHZ
An Adreno 305 GPU for gaming.
It's definitely 'new', and in a good way. Motorola did make a great decision to upgrade goodies that the previous G had and build a new one. This way, its safe to say that the previous G played a vital role in the Moto line and now the 2014 edition is going to too. Do let me know what you guys think abut the device.
Thank you for all your time.
